I had a problem with IE and started using Firefox as my browser. Ever since I started using Firefox my Windows Update feature will not open. It tries to open IE then the box abruptly closes. I also have not seen the automatic update icon on the desktop since using Firefox. Is there a fix or some sort of solution that won't involve a lot of time and effort.

The Windows update site requires Internet Explorer.

One site that you can use to install Windows updates from is http://windizupdate.com/.

This site is NOT from Microsoft. I have never used this site so can not comment on how good it is, but I have seen it recommended elsewhere. For more information on Windizupdate see WindizUpdate - Wikipedia

If you want to get your IE problem fixed, you can try asking at Eileen's Lounge, that is a support site that specializes in Microsoft products.

I'll suggest you to uninstall your IE and then reinstall IE for the Windows Update. Personally, I don't trust any other sites except Microsoft for any of their security updates. There are just too many hackers for Microsoft out there.
