I purposely set firefox to always open in private browsing mode by right click > properties and adding -private to the end of the target. Then I caught a virus which made me decide to uninstall / reinstall firefox. Now it still opens in private mode but I can't stop it. When I right click > properties the -private is no longer there. When I go to the tools tab the private browsing options are grayed out. When I try ctrl + shift + p nothing happens. How can I turn off private browsing?

I also disabled history at some point but I don't remember how I did it. I just now remembered that. This could be what is causing the problem.

Did you make sure that you are no longer have the -private switch appended to the command line in the desktop shortcut?

Did you check the PB setting? To see all History and Cookie settings, choose:

  • Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting Firefox will: Use custom settings for history
  • Deselect: [ ] "Always use private browsing mode"

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

I tried safe mode and everything looks the same.

That fixed it. That was what I did when I disabled history. I just couldn't remember how I did it. I'm good to go now. Thanks.
