You may have switch on the VoiceOver accessibility feature (System Preferences -> Speech;(fn) Cmd-F5)

Thank you. I don't know why Voice Over would only speak the downloads--no other talking about other navigation.

It's still talking! I'm pretty darned sure it's a Firefox thing because it only happens when I download. Any thoughts?

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
