I'm considering moving from Safari, which waits till they're the window on top. This could seriously complicate eg. browsing a list of suggestions, where habit has been to open the ones i like the look of in tabs to maybe watch later, sometimes much later... Chances are there's a fix somewhere, and i guess it might be a Youtube thing not a Firefox thing. I want a page to sit there, not launch video or audio until i specifically turn to it (in fact better still not automatically launch even then). Any advice?

I suggest the Flashblock extension for Firefox: http://flashblock.mozdev.org/

When it's activated, it blocks Flash content, such as YouTube videos, until you actually click on them to start them. You can add a button to one of the menu bars or toolbars to turn the add-on on or off with one click.
