Problem with Optimum.net encryption and Thunderbird - Optimum says it's your fault (transcription available)

When I recently added a new optimum.net email acct. to my others (Optimum as well) to Thunderbird, I got a warning from Thunderbird that Optimum has no safety encryption whatsoever, and I must use only 'only at my own risk'.

After over 2 hours with Optimum 'chat', they finally admitted that they only encrypt for use with Outlook. They never warned me themselves about such a change in policy.

They said the 'may' get around to considering fixing that, but they have no plans to, even though I told them I would leave Optimum as my carrier before I would leave Thunderbird.

Can you give me more info on this, and tell me if there is any workaround?

Optimum refused to send me the transcript of the 'chat', but I have saved it all along the way, and told the rep as such. If you desire to see it, I will forward it to you if you provide an email address to do so.

thank you in advance, Bob Hansmann <bobbybmusic@optimum.net>

What encryption?

I checked their setup pages, and I see SSL/TLS is offered. https://www.optimum.net/FAQ/#/answers/a_id/3614

Their setup instructions for Thunderbird include SSL as well. https://www.optimum.net/FAQ/#/answers/a_id/3897

So I think we need a base line. What encryption and I guess your encountering a problem, so what is the problem that started all this off.

What I do see when I test the server is a notice "The remote server port 443 is closed. No SSL/TSL security can be tested. " that is the port SSL/TLS certificates are issued on, so it might be a misconfiguration at the server that is the problem.

Thank you, Matt, "So I think we need a base line. What encryption and I guess your encountering a problem, so what is the problem that started all this off. "

There was no hint of this issue until I added a new email account and added it to Thunderbird. Thunderbird warning said server uses no encryption, and I can only use 'at my own risk'

When I 'chatted' about it with Optimum (for over an hour), I was told Optimum encryption only works with Outlook. Here's the tail end of the 'chat session': [ Thank you very much for holding Robert. I have been trying to get your request address by performing multiple escalations but at this moment they say that there is nothing in place that can be done for that. The options provided are either contacting Thunderbird or to switch to Outlook Erick 15:30 They told me that is a Thunderbird issue ]

I can show the whole transcript if you would like. They refused me a copy, but I was copying & pasting the whole session from the start.

re :. Thunderbird warning said server uses no encryption, and I can only use 'at my own risk'

Sounds like: mail account setup window. Red background Warning Incoming settings:mail server name does not use encryption Technical details > Outgoing settings:mail server name does not use encryption Technical details > Some additional info... checkbox: I accept the risks A 'Done' button to create the account.

But that usually means you have not chosen the correct Ports or Connection Security : SSL/TLS options when creating the account.

I could understand it if you had selected port 143 and 25 respectively and Connection Security : none.

So what exactly are you using ? did you set up a setting that uses 'Connection Security set as none ? Go through proceedure to create account, click on the 'manual config' button Post image of the settings you are trying to use.

That's about it, Toad-Hall. The incoming server setting was through port 110, and connection security: none.

Outgoing through port 587, security: none.

Changing the security settings to SSL/TLS, normal password (I) and no authentication (O) brought the (I) port to 995 and the (O) port to 465 automatically.

Many thanks. I don't know if this solved the issue, but it sure was necessary. Again, many thanks, Bobby
