I have just noticed that two folders entitled tax 2016-2017 and tax 2017-2018 have disappeared from my email account. All other "tax" folders are still there. The account is a POP account, and a similar disappearance happened some months ago, when I updated Thunderbird. On that occasion all seven of the "tax" folders disappeared, but reappeared at the next update. I don't think I have updated Thunderbird since I last used the folders a couple of weeks ago so i think this is a different problem. The two folders are the last to be set up and contain emails transferred over the past two years at a rate of three or four a month. UPDATE; 3 hours after the above questions was drafted. Have rebooted the PC and all "tax" folders have now disappeared and a pop up keeps appearing saying that the email account is being processed so please wait to get messages. This pop up won't close, or if it does it reappears immediately. It also stops Thunderbird being closed except with control, alt, Del. Since the original update some months ago, I also keep getting a box telling me that the program cannot connect, and about two minutes later another saying that the connection has timed out. The email program is meanwhile working normally!

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try one of the following:

  • Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
  • Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.
