Thunderbird displays message that it's downloading messages but doesn't.
In years of using Thunderbird, I never saw this happen. When I clicked on Get Messages, Thunderbird flashed a message: Downloading 1 of 3. After a second, that changed to: No messages to download. And there really weren't any new messages.
Chosen solution
I decided to do a System Restore. It failed to do the System Restore, but it did involve a reboot, which solved the problem.
Edit: I should add that I considered a reboot early on, but felt that this wasn't the kind of problem a reboot would solve. Go figure.

I just tried again. This time, it flashed a message that it was downloading 1 of 4 and then immediately replaced that with No messages to download.
I suspect that there really are messages waiting for me. So what's happening?
Could there be messages that are moving directly to Junk or Trash, or are being moved by filters in Thunderbird?
You could log in to your email account at the provider's website to keep an eye on what's really there.
Thank you for your reply.
No. I have no filters set up and no Junk folder. Just to be absolutely sure, I clicked on each folder in turn. They only contain what they're supposed to.
I was already planning to go to Webmail, but I'd like to avoid that. I prefer to have all my mail in my Thunderbird folders, and Webmail will download new messages before I can tell it to leave the messages on the server.
