Chosen solution

The Lightning Calendar adds an "Events and Tasks" item to my menu, so it's already there.

Every time I have installed Lightning it has added its own button as well, though not to the main toolbar, but up by the close/minimize/restore buttons. I have never found a way to remove it from there, so I'm puzzled by your request. (You'll note that I also put the Application Menu and Address Book buttons up there, to ensure they are always visible and accessible.)
