I have a mail client with godaddy who provides my domain and an email address, but I'd like to use Thunderbird instead to read and send my emails. How?

It all depends on your package with godaddy. they set the server names not us. So I suggest you stat with godaddy. here https://au.godaddy.com/help/find-my-server-and-port-settings-in-the-email-setup-center-6949

Then you add your email address to Thunderbird as an existing account entering the server and port information godaddy provided.
