Why are the older messages in my inbox being removed

I have 2 gmail accounts, one named 'Newer' and the other named 'Newest'. My problem is with the latter. For the Inbox folder, the messages counts are 36 total and 11 unread, and the earliest date is 4/30/16. The Sent folder counts are 308/0 and the earliest date is 11/3/15. Of course, the Trash folder can be manipulated, but its statistics are: counts - 21/0 and date - 4/30/16.

The other Newer account does not display these oddities:

          Folder Counts Earliest Date
          Inbox 111/9 7/31/15
          Sent 131/0 10/20/15
          Trash 494/0 12/20/11

I cannot find an option or a variable that I could have set which could bring about this state of affairs. My question now becomes "where are the messages for late 2015 and early 2016 that should have shown up in in the Newest Inbox and Trash folders?"
