Chosen solution

So you'll never use newsgroups, RSS feeds, Saved Searches, delayed sending via the Outbox?

Your choice, your loss.

The linked article tells you how to hide it by editing prefs.js. Take care.

You cannot remove the default account. Is it marked Default?

My default account is the mail account I'm using, att.net. The mail.bellsouth.net account says it is a special account with no associated identities. I see my mail account, att.net., has an icon mail by it and the icon next to the mail.bellsouth.net account is a computer icon. There must be someway I can remove mail.bellsouth.net. My att.net is the default account.

Thunderbird comes with a built-in "special" account, normally named Local Folders. It sounds as if your Local Folders has been renamed to mail.bellsouth.net.

Some users seem to find Local Folders offensive and try to rename or remove it, or at least hide it. I see it as a key part of Thunderbird and use it extensively. I have in mine RSS feeds, newsgroups and my own Saved Search folders. It is also the home of the Outbox folder.

I suggest you rename it to Local Folders, to avoid future confusion, then remove from it anything you have put into it that doesn't need to be kept.

I found I could change it to "Local Folders". However, my preference is not to have it at all. Does this mean I am stuck with it?

I fear I may mess it up even more so I'll just keep it. Thank you for your help.

By mistake I set up a second account which shows my real account address. Any time I try to change a setting on my real account a box shows with "This account already exists." I see no way to delete or remove this empty useless second account.

7qitrebla, trying to ask a question in a 4 month old, solved thread is not the best practice. Right click the account on the left side in the Folder Pane and select Settings. At the bottom of the account settings page is Account Actions. Remove Account is there. If this does not solve your issue, please start a new thread with your details. I will not be responding to this thread again.
