The two newest versions of Firefox crash on my pc. Versions 42 and 43 constantly crash when executed even in safe mode. I have tried to completely uninstall and reinstall even without any plugins but it still crashes. Each time I have reverted back to version 41.0.2 and have had no issues.

I am currently running Windows 8.1 and the OS is fully patched. My video and other drivers are fully up to date.

Also, I am running the latest 64 bit varrient of Cyberfox and have had no problems at all. This is isolated to just Firefox versions 42 and 43.

Latest crash id below is from version 43. Crash ID: bp-bc63d3fa-3616-4c31-a8ab-b8b192151217

Kind Regards,

Sorry to hear about the crashes, and thank you for the report ID.

This looks like a crash caused by Websense/TRITON Endpoint. The product support page indicates that there is a version 8.1.0 which supports Firefox 40-42, but maybe not 43:

Could you check on whether you have that update yet?

If Websense is an unchangeable feature of your environment -- you can't update or disable it -- then you might want to try switching to the Extended Support Release version of Firefox (ESR). This is derived from Firefox 38 and while it will get security updates over the next several months, it will not get new features. Websense supports Firefox 38.

If you decide to switch, here is how I suggest installing it:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent, corrupted, or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 38.5.0esr from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/organizations/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Rename the program folder, either:

(64-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\Fx41

(32-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\Fx41

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that old folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

  • \Fx41\Plugins
  • \Fx41\browser\plugins

Thanks jscher2000! Much appreciated.

I hadn't had time to look completely look through the error log. It's a relief to finally know the cause as i have tried system restores and also a couple of fresh installations but still had the error. Originally I thought it may have been an MS update but then suspected a compatibility problem.

I have looked at the link that you posted and strangely enough version 41.0.2 works but 42 and 43 still crash. For the time being I have disabled the updates as it is stable until I get websense updated.

My company runs websense on all of the PCs so I will contact the desktop guys and see if it can't be updated.

Thanks again for your help.

Mike
