The calendar and task tabs are added to Thunderbird when you install the 'Lightning' add-on. If you will never use it , you can remove, or deactivate Lightning. 'Tools - Add-ons - Extensions' - look for 'Lightning' - 'Disable' or 'Remove' Any open tabs can be closed by clicking the 'X' in the right corner of each tab.
