After a recent update of firefox and flash firefox will now go into a state where it fails to load any pages. It will just sit there with the little spinner on all the tabs like it's loading but does nothing. I can attempt to close firefox which may or may not work or try to end the process which usually works but has also failed with an access denied message from task manager. If it does close and I try to load it again the process will start, use about 5k of memory then just do nothing. Program never comes up. The only solution is to reboot the computer. This is under windows 7 64bit.

Can you start Firefox in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift/Options key?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

I did notice hardware acceleration turned itself back on and have disabled that again. If it happens again I'll try the other things.

Have there been any reports of conflicts with tortisesvn? I just had the issue again and it happened while using svn. I just downloaded an update for tortisesvn and it made me close firefox to install it do to firefox using files it needed to update. All the years I've been using firefox and svn never had that happen before.

If you are not sure about tortisesvn, you should contact their techs.
