My computer is Windows 7, 64 bit. I have Norton Internet Security. Everything was working well until a few days ago. Now when I start up my computer it takes a very long time to get to the welcome screen and then to my main screen where my icons are.

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache. In order to try to fix these problems, the first step is to clear both cookies and the cache. Note: This will temporarily log you out of all sites you're logged in to. To clear cache and cookies do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > History > Clear recent history or (if no Firefox button is shown) go to Tools > Clear recent history.
  2. Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
  3. Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
  4. From the details list, check Cache and Cookies and uncheck everything else.
  5. Now click the Clear now button.

Further information can be found in the Clear your cache, history and other personal information in Firefox article.

No that doesn't work. As a matter of course, I always clear my cache and cookies out by selecting everything. I do this every day. Wish this were the answer. But thank you.

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

You can also try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

There isn't a so called rules area that I can locate with the Norton Internet security that I can change. I eventually do get my computer started without using safe mode but it is a long process. The browser itself works fine once the computer is started. It is the startup process of the computer itself that now is the problem that started after the upgrade.
