In new versions the mail display is always automatically shown in Thunderbird and I always have to hide it.

Where can I turn this "feature" off.

I want only to see my incoming mail list and want to choose myself if i want to open a mail or not.

Try view>layout>message pane and untick it. I believe that is what you want.
