LG Nexus 5 appears in my Google 'Your devices' since using Firefox for Android?

I've noticed on my Google Account 'Your devices' screen (https://myaccount.google.com/device-activity) a rogue device has appeared, an LG Nexus 5. I first thought my account had been compromised, but after changing my password (2FA is on too) and removing the device, it keeps reappearing.

I raised this with Google and they directed me to this thread:

https://support.google.com/accounts/thread/20242885?hl=en

suggesting it's caused by Firefox on my mobile? The timings seem to match, I switched to Firefox in November and this is when this LG appeared.

Any info on what's causing this and if I can stop it?

Firefox Preview gives me...

Mozilla/5.0 (Android 10; Mobile; rv:71.0) Gecko/71.0 Firefox/71.0

An update, since 23rd Jan this issue has gone away. I had a Firefox update around the same time. The Nexus has been replaced by a generic 'Android Device' in Google my devices.

HI!

Is this device appears on https://accounts.firefox.com/ > Devices & Apps?

Hi.

No, only my expected devices are displayed on the Firefox Device & Apps list.

Seems pretty conclusive. Just tested it.

  • Have Firefox open on both my Mac and Android, on google.com with my Google account logged in (profile pic top right)
  • Go to https://myaccount.google.com/device-activity and logout the LG Nexus 5.
  • Refresh the Google pages on both my Mac and Android. On the Android my account is now signed out.
  • Log back into Google on my Android.
  • Refresh the Google Device Activity page again, the Nexus is back.

So why would a Google login on Firefox for Android be interpreted by Google as an LG Nexus 5? Very weird.

Enter "what is my user agent" on google.com page. What does it return?

Android Chrome

Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 10; ONEPLUS A6003) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/79.0.3945.116 Mobile Safari/537.36

Android Firefox

Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 6.0; Nexus 5 Build/MRA58N) FxQuantum/68.0 AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/76.0.3809.111 Mobile Safari/537.36

I can override this, but then the user agent would be fixed. Not sure why Firefox isn't picking this up?

Hi

Have you tried this with the new Firefox Preview browser? Does it give the same results?

Hi

That look like we may have fixed that issue in Firefox Preview. We are still working in improving Firefox Preview, but you may find that it is a smoother and faster browsing experiance.
