I would like messages to show as unread in Thunderbird on my computer even if they have been viewed on my phone. I am using the native Android email app on the phone.

That is how IMAP mail accounts work. Some POP accounts also mark messages as read when accessed on a phone.
Basically this is not a Thunderbird issue, nor something you can fix in Thunderbird.
