Turning off notifications in MacOSX 10.11.6 is not working. I do not want the notifcations interupting my work.
I have done all the things suggested and turned off all notifications in the Notification Centre but the notices still keep appearing in the top left of my screen. I absolutely do not want this. The little red number on the icon was bad enough.

Sorry, this was a browser-centric response!
What kind of notifications are they? For example:
Websites can send short "desktop" notifications if you give them permission. On Windows, those appear lower right, but of course, Windows and Mac often differ... Is a page asking for permission too often, or does it seem to have permission even though you never granted it?

Whoops, Thunderbird, sorry.
Check this setting:
Thunderbird menu > Preferences > General
In the section "When new messages arrive" uncheck the box for "Show an alert"
Does that do it?
Thank you. I have now solved the problem. It was with notifications of new emails from Thunderbird on MacOSX appearing in top right hand corner - after years of this not happening. I unchecked all the boxes in Notification Centre - but did not see that there was another box (None) that required unchecking too - though it seemed quite redundant. Ignoring emails is an important element in productivity and so is software upgrades that leave your default settings alone. Mozilla please note.
