stop my program from opening emails until I view sender
until today I could view all emails and open only those I trust. Now my program opens the first email automatically. How do I get it back to its original configuration?

That sounds like another Microsoft mail user asking questions. Thunderbird has no scripts, and does not display remote images, so the risks associated with actually opening a mail are almost Zero. I say this to reinforce the knowledge that opening mail is nothing mystical and not opening offers no security advantage over not opening it.
I would assume to not open the first mail you would need to tun off the viewing pane. F8
