I have just received a pop-up saying "A security and stability update for Firefox has been downloaded and is ready to be installed".

That is so nice... I wonder how Firefox knows the best time download something..

SOMETIMES I VISIT A CUSTOMER AND I HAVE TO USE A 3G MODEM BECAUSE HE CAN´T GIVE ME INTERNET ACCESS FOR SECURITY REASONS.

AND SOMETIMES MY 3G CONNECTION GETS REAL SLOW BECAUSE THERE IS CRAPPY SOFTWARE DOWNLOADING A 50MB UPDATE WHEN I LEAST WANT IT, AND COULD BE VERY WELL DONE LATER IN MY OFFICE WITH A 100MBPS LINK.

FUNNY THING IS, THE FIREFOX POP-UP SAYS IT HAS ALREADY DONE THE DOWNLOAD. IT DOES NOT WARN ME ABOUT NEW VERSIONS. IT DOES NOT LET ME CHANGE THE SETTINGS TO BE WARNED OF NEWER VERSIONS BEFORE A DOWNLOAD.

ADOBE FLASH PLAYER, ON THE OTHER HAND, WARNS ME OF NEW VERSIONS AND ASKS WHAT TO DO NEXT TIME: AUTOMATIC DOWNLOAD, WARN, OR NOTHING.

FINALLY, THE QUESTION: DOES FIREFOX RESPECT THE USER LIKE ADOBE? ANSWER: NO!

THAT WAS EASY...

Hello,

Sorry you had to go through that. You can actually change your settings in Firefox so that it notifies you when updates are available/doesn't notify you at all.

  • Tools (or New Fx Menu) > Options > Advanced > Update

The latest version is 33.0.2, your user agent shows that you are using Firefox 32. See the following for the security fixes in 33.

For future reference, note that when you go to:

  • Help (or New Fx Menu > Help-29) > About Firefox

It will automatically check for updates and download.

Try this:

  1. Click the menu button.
  2. Click Options.
  3. Click the Advanced tab.
  4. Under Update, choose Check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them.
  • It looks like someone posted before me, so my post is obsolete.

Of course I can enter Settings, Options, Update settings, Special Options, Advanced Settings, SuperUser Settings, I_know_what_I_m_doing settings and disable automatic update.

The point is that should be disabled right away and just ask the user if he wants to download a new update now or later, or when he connects to a different network that might be faster (or slower).

I guess there are some Ex-Microsoft people working at Mozilla. That stuff stinks Microsoft...

Normally, you wouldn't be using 3G (which is what Mozilla assumes), but you're probably in an area where you don't get normal internet. That's not really their fault. I know that downloading updates in the background is kind of sneaky (and wastes your "3G"), but a lot of users would get impatient since having to wait to download updates is a pain, and therefore they would cancel the download every time Firefox asks them if they want to update, degrading their security. The background download feature is for their own good, and if the update is downloaded in the background, they won't really realize it or be able to intervene, so the update can be installed instantly and it wouldn't take them 3 minutes to download it. Imagine this: Firefox asks you if you want to download an update. You do, and it takes a million hours, which makes you impatient, and you might even have to get off of the computer before it finishes. If the updates downloads in the background, you won't notice it, and it'll be ready to instantly install once it finishes downloading (which gives you the impression that the update is fast), and you can close Firefox even if it's downloading in the background because it resumes later. But you can always set Firefox to ask you to download updates, so I have no idea why you're so mad.

And Windows asks you if you want to enable Automatic Updates or if you want Windows to ask you if it wants to download updates during Windows Setup. If you bought a PC with Windows pre-installed on it and Automatic Updates was already enabled, that's the fault of the PC manufacturer, not Microsoft.
