ingdirect.com has a security feature to "register this computer" to avoid answering the security questions each time you log in. This feature has always worked in Internet Explorer even when clearing all browsing history, cache, etc. but leaving the ingdirect.com-related cookies. I recently tried Google Chrome for a few weeks and it worked perfectly as well.

I switched to Firefox 4.0.1 a few days ago and it works fine with every website I regularly use except the ingdirect.com "register this computer". I have no add-ons or extensions installed other than the defaults, selectivcookiedelete and my anti-virus (AVG Free). I have disabled and even un-installed selectivecookiedelete with no avail. I also had selectivecookiedelete to speficically keep all ING Direct cookies. I have turned off all privacy settings that might affect this, particularly clearing nothing on exit.

I have reported this to ING Direct as well, but I believe the problem must lie within Firefox since it works with Google Chrome and I would imagine that if ING were doing something out of the ordinary, Chrome wouldn't handle it.

Unfortunately, to test this, you will need someone with an ING Direct account.

I really hope you can fix this and fix it soon, I really love your browser.

Such details are stored in a cookie.

  • Create an allow cookie exception (Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: Exceptions) to keep such a cookie, especially for secure websites and if cookies expire when Firefox is closed.
  • In Private Browsing - Use Firefox without saving history mode all cookies are session cookies that expire if that session is ended, so websites won't remember you.

Clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and passwords.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Cor-el, thank you for your reply.

I did some more experimenting and it seems that I have found a bug in Firefox

Under Tools>Options>Privacy if I have "Clear History When Firefox Closes" checked but in the Settings for that option, NOTHING is checked and the problem occurs then I uncheck "Clear History When Firefox Closes" the problem goes away.

It is clearing something needed even though it is technically told not to clear anything by having all the boxes unchecked.

I agree with you that it must be a cookie yet I see cookies for home.ingdirect.com, ingdirect.com and secure.ingdirect.com persisting across sessions.

Any other thoughts?

Thank you again for your time.

rpmendez, you could be right. Maybe it's a regression from one of the fixes from 4.0.1.

I'd help you test but since you said you need a ING Direct account, I can't. So my next suggestion is going to sound like a pain in the ass. :P

I was thinking maybe you can downgrade back to 4.0 and try your theory out there and see if having "Clear History When Firefox Closes" checked & also having nothing checked inside "Settings for Clearing History" works with ING Direct. If it does work without any problems on 4.0, then I believe a regression has happened and then we can file a bug on it to investigate.

Though this brings up a crazy question in my mind. Why would anyone go to the effort of checking that checkbox only to not use it at all? :P In my opinion, I think if you select nothing on the "Settings for Clearing History" and click either OK or Cancel then it should automatically de-select the checkmark for "Clear History When Firefox Closes".

Unless there's a reason you do this that I'm not seeing? :P I mean it looks like all you're really doing is saving yourself one extra click by having it prechecked when you come back to use that feature.

Hi Noah_SUMO,

I don't mind going through a pain-in-the-ass especially if it solves the problem and even better if it helps the Firefox community in general. I will try downgrading in the next day or 2 and get back with results.

Regarding your puzzle over those settings: its not that I want it set that way, I was unchecking/checking every box and restarting over-and-over to figure out which exact setting was causing the problem. My simple goal is to clear my browsing history, cache and junk cookies while leaving my banking, eBay and other such cookies intact. For some very strange reason, it worked fine with what seemed like normal/sensible settings for every site except ING, all the other websites behave like they should.

Attached is what I believe my options should look like and what I actually want cleared, but as soon as I check that "Clear History When Firefox Closes" no matter what is checked or unchecked in the following window causes the problem. The attachment in the prior post was an attempt to demonstrate the bug, not how much Jack Daniels I may or may not have drank, lol.

Thanks for the response and I will post more data as soon as I have the time to experiment some more.
