I have upgraded to Windows 10 and sincerely wish I hadn't. I used to used LiveMail 2012 which was fine. However, under windows 10 it keeps crashing as it can't sync the calendar (so I understand). I hate the new Mail client - it's OK for toddlers, but not for grownups. So I changed to Thunderbird thinking this would solve my problems - my wife uses it on the same machine with no problems.

However, I cannot send anything using my outlook accounts. Other accounts (eg Virginmedia) work fine. I receive OK, but when I try to send get a timed out message. the config is attached.

My wife doesn't have an outlook account.

Any help? I use Norton Internet Security - I have turned it off, but it makes no difference. I am using Thunderbird 5.1.1

Why are you using a ancient version of Thunderbird? I suggest you upgrade to the latest version, if nothing else it will make it easier for people to help you.

I hope you enabled something like the Windows Firewall when you turned off Norton. I suggest you run windows update and also update your graphics driver. WinVer reports that I'm running version 1511 (OS build 10586.420) of Windows 10.

You can frequently configure an account to use another accounts SMTP server. Try using your ISPs SMTP server with the Outlook account.

First of all that was a mis-key, it's 45.1.1.

Norton Firewall was tuned off for all of the 5 minutes I required to test whether it changed anything.

Windows 10 is up-to-date.

Why would my graphics driver prevent connection to an smtp server? Details please.

By the way, the problem also occurs on Windows 7.

Turns out I need port 25, not 587 which is the default.

So, I don't need to check my graphics driver after all, Phew!

Sorry, I just read that ExQuilla does NOT support calendar sync. So that would not be a "reason to buy" for you.

Is it important to sync the calendar? Because IMAP does not include that feature.

You should be able to sync calendar and you might also solve the sending problem using an add-on that adds Exchange ActiveSync Web Services to Thunderbird. After the trial period, it's $10/year:

https://addons.mozilla.org/thunderbird/addon/exquilla-exchange-web-services/

That's less than Microsoft Outlook 2016, which obviously is much more full-featured than "Mail" (although, as a Windows Live Mail user you might have received a "one year free" offer for Outlook).

Thanks Jscher 2000 - useful information. My frustration with 10 is that using livemail 2012 under windows 7 everything worked fine. Now it falls over unless I stop it before it gets to that point.

I don't really want to fork out for Office 365 - all I need I can do under 2007 - though no doubt that will start failing at some time. If it were a one off cost, then I would be tempted.

Now I've got the right port, I'll work around the calendar.

Windows Live Mail 2012 probably was never updated for Windows 10, although, I have seen it running on a Windows 10 system that was upgraded from Windows 8.1 with everything left "in place."

P.S. It's so strange that port 25 works. Maybe this is an ISP restriction?? Make sure you still get encryption, otherwise you're broadcasting your email credentials in the clear.

Thanks again.

My ISP is Virginmedia; their mail service uses Port 465 - this doesn't work with Outlook. I've done a bit more research and yes, 25 doesn't seem to be recommended any more, but Microsoft uses it.

MS Ports

I'll see if my ISP has any advice on this. Maybe look at encryption as well.

I too have outlook.com smtp servers connecting using port 25.
