This is with an old Tiscali email account. There is already a question current similar to this but the following information suggests that it is a Talktalk issue. This has happened to me several times over the past few years when I was using an old version of Outlook 2000. I changed to Thunderbird as the only comparable program when Win 10 updates finally made outlook unusable a couple of months ago expecting to see the end of the problem. Now, regularly on Sunday mornings the service stops working and restarts a few hours later, or it has every time until today - still waiting. It has also happened on Thursdays occasionally. My Kindle accesses the mail OK and my wife, using Thunderbird with the same settings but on a Talktalk email using my account also works fine. I use IMAP at the moment on port 143 and changing to different ports does nothing. However, left alone it all comes back later - or has so far. I doubt this is a Thunderbird issue but my very well informed IT wise son is equally baffled.

For IMAP access, they recommend using imap.tiscali.co.uk on port 993, SSL/TLS security, authentication = normal password, User name = username@tiscali.co.uk

If you have these settings, and it still works sporadically, it very likely is a Tiscali issue.

It may also be worth running in Windows safe mode to rule out the possibility you have a security program interfering with email connections - a common problem. On W10, Shift+Restart, Troubleshooting, Advanced Options, Startup Settings, Reboot, 5.

Thanks sfhowes, It is now working again and if it goes to normal routine I am expecting it to go off again on next Thursday and again next Sunday as that seems to be a regular pattern. I agree that it is probably a Tiscali problem as I note that there is another similar issue raised only a week or so ago. It always occurs sometime after midnight and clears sometime after noon. I think it used to occur less often when I was using Outlook 2000 on Win 10 on the same machine so it seems pretty conclusive. I have tried port 993 but it only seems to work on port 143 but that may be coincidence together with timing. Next time I may try the safe mode running but I think the failure to recognise a valid password may be a clue pointing to Tiscali. I did clear it for some time with Outlook by using the pop.talktalk.net mail server but then that didn't work after a few weeks. However, I shall raise the issue with Talktalk and report back but that may be in a few days.

After a long conversation with Talktalk the helpdesk response is that it is a Thunderbird problem. I cannot agree but it is strange that Microsoft Mail works fine, my Kindle works fine, my other email addresses work fine as Talktalk emails not Tiscali and even that works most of the time which suggests that I should just change my email address which happens to be the account email address, or just change the password. However, the problem is probably a bit of both - Talktalk and Thunderbird -but it is probably best to just cut losses and change the email address and everything that goes with it.

Just to report the latest on this.. Last night, after it all went wrong again, I changed the port to 993 as advised and this morning I was still getting no activity and time-out as opposed to unrecognised password. Mail had been ticking over faithfully all night so I reset the port to 143 and I got emails with a few missing which timed quite early after the problem restarted at about 2100 last night but had been picked up by Mail. There must be something that talktalk is doing which affects old tiscali accounts and there must be something which Thunderbird is doing differently. The settings I am using at the moment are the default settings as when first installed, imap.tiscali.co.uk, port 143, STARTTLS and encrypted password and it IS working perfectly - for now.
