In the XFCE desktop that I use the key combination is alt + space: this brings up a menu to restore the normal maximised window with the buttons visible. I don't know what the key combo is for Cinnamon, I guess it's in the user guide somewhere?

The Mint 17 I am using is the Qiana version with KDE not Cinnamon........
