I've been using Thunderbird for a long time now, and am wanting to add a secondary account, but it won't let me set it up. I continue getting an error that it cannot log in to the server, that either the configuration, email or password is wrong.

I've tried four different times, have tried changing the password, have tried rebooting and setting up again, all to no avail. I've also called my ISP and they cannot figure it out, either.

Generally when folk tell me they get that error when setting up an account, the first thing I think of is antivirus. They scramble email, block connections and even block Thunderbird. All of which comes back as a user name or password error because the guys that wrote that stuff could not imagine a firewall just blocking everything or something like Nortons SONAR just blocking setup because it could.

Try in the operating systems safe mode with networking, that disable the ubiquitous antivirus and see if that makes it work.
