If I wanted to delete a bunch of emails I would select them using ctrl key and select email. In the last week I have been doing the same but now after selecting 3 or 4 emails, instead of just highlighting them, it opens them all up. So, then I have to close them all down and start over. If I want to do more than 3, I have to release the ctrl key each time which sometimes works. So, something has changed.

Can you try with another mouse?

Thunderbird seems to be unusually sensitive to the quality of mouse clicks and often interprets a single click as a double. This frequently indicates that the mouse is a bit old and tired and its microswitches aren't operating cleanly. It's surprising how often a new mouse improves matters.

I was surprised that this would work. I would have never guessed that it was the switch sensitivity of the mouse. Got a new one and it works just fine.
