My original thunderbird had the address book lists between all folders and the subject names. how do I get it back?

I don't ever recall seeing such an arrangement.
There is an add-on that adds a view of the address book to the main window. I've never seen the value of this myself; the address book can be made to appear in the composition window where, to my mind, it is rather more appropriate. F9 in the composition window.
