How do we import a back-up copy of our address book (abook.mab) into Thunderbird? If we cannot import it, is there a way we can convert it?

We recently had to move photos and movies from the flash drive to the disk inside our 2011 iMAC. In the process, we lost the address book to thunderbird. We have a copy of our address book from a time machine backup, but cannot figure out how to get it into THunderbird. We have tried importing it twice, but it ends up scrambled.

You should be able to copy the file from the backup to the current profile. You will have to use one of the methods available to make the user library visible, since it is hidden by default. http://www.tekrevue.com/tip/restore-user-library-folder-os-x-mavericks/

So the address book seems to be there, but Thunderbird does not seem to find it there.

there will always be an abook.mab, if it is missing it will be created on startup. So replacing the backup with what you have does what?
