I am running OpenSuSe 11.4 and Firefox 6.0.2 and am not able hit sites that require the Sun version JRE. I have installed the java-1_6_0-sun - Java(TM) 6 Runtime Environment through Yast, restarted my browser and the plugin fails.

You need a 32 bit Java version and plugin if you have a 32 bit Firefox version.
A 64 bit version doesn't work with a 32 bit Firefox version.
