KB search brings up articles that do not exist or are not accessible

  2. That's one of the articles that was removed from the KB and placed in the [https://support.mozilla.com/tiki-browse_categories.php?parentId=24 Archive category]. Background: [http://support.mozilla.com/tiki-view_forum_thread.php?comments_parentId=268673&forumId=3] [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=475608 Bug 475608 - Search show a result that shouldn't be displayed]

  3. Thanks Alice. I do not have the privileges to access that archive.

Error Permission denied you cannot view this page

I had come across the article that was mentioned in the Bug myself a while ago: Running+different+versions+of+Firefox+at+the+same+time

Can we have a list of articles that are no longer available as it is not easy to check the full list every time to see if an article is still there? Maybe in a KB article.

  4. A link to the Archive category (and other article categories) can be found under the Top category, https://support.mozilla.com/tiki-browse_categories.php?parentId=.... Can you get to the list that way?

If not, then I think that an admin needs to make that list of archived articles available to moderators, at the very least.

  6. I see all those categories plus the Archive category.

If you don't get an answer here from Chris or another admin then consider adding a comment to the bug report, requesting that contributors get access to the Archive category or to a list of archived articles maintained elsewhere, if you think it would be helpful.

  7. The archive category is only available to locale leaders and approvers. The only reason the archive category exists is because locale leaders got mad that articles were being deleted, rather than being preserved for whoever wanted to copy the content to their own site.

  8. Why can't we (contributors) see them and be able to copy/paste the content of an article to use in a post to solve an issue?

The same will happen if we can't help users who are using Firefox 2 anymore and won't or can't upgrade to Firefox 3 (Mac 10.2/3 and Win 98/SE/ME/NT4) because of older hardware. If articles do not have the text for those older Firefox versions, then we wont be able to help them properly or we need to type that text ourselves. There should be a difference between users searching for help and contributors that want to help solving problems. The latter should still be able to access those articles. The same should apply to forum searches: contributors should be able to search all forum posts and only get results from articles marked as solved. That will allow us to check suggestions that were made a previous time, but that may not have been confirmed.

    * After all are done, next step is to remove Firefox 2 content. When should we remove “2.0″ from “Show customized content for”? * Let’s add a notification for Firefox 2 users that encourages people to upgrade. Once that’s up, we can remove the UI for choosing Firefox 2.

  9. cor-el, Here's another article that's just been archived (in case you're keeping track)

Hotmail full version does not work in Firefox 3

  10. Thanks Alice.

I still think that these are useful articles to keep accessible: Changing the language pack Command line arguments Editing configuration files Plugin scanning Profile folder contents

If they are not appropriate to the SUMO knowledge base then why not just leave an empty article with a link to the corresponding MozillaZine KB article in such an article exists? Then at least users can find there answers elsewhere more easily ans forum threads that link to the articles don't get broken with a page with an error message or a '?' if an article will be removed in the future.

  11. cor-el,

I agree with you but I think it would take a "command decision" to get that accomplished.

  12. We just need to repeat things a few times, may it helps to get attention. Many changes are only made by viewing at things from users side who search for answers and not us contributors that need to be able to provide visitors that have problems problems with links to articles without having to check every now and then if articles still exist (or wait for a complaint if they do not exist).

  14. How to disable the Smart Location Bar (which previously redirected to Hiding bookmarks in the Smart Location bar according to this) also comes up blank. The new article name is Cannot clear Location bar history but redirects aren't working.

Chris said here that this is Bug 487284 which is fixed and should take effect on Tuesday.
