Using Ctrl-q to quit while messages are being checked for results in unterminated process

I am using Thunderbird 24.4.0 self-compiled on Linux x86_64

If I open thunderbird and press ctrl-q while it is still checking for new messages, the process doesn't terminate. So when I try to open thunderbird again it tells me I have to close the existing process.

If I open thunderbird and go to file->quit while new messages are being checked for, the process terminates correctly.

I am using a source-only distribution so I cannot test if the same behavior occurs in a packaged version.

Ctrl + Q is not a valid shortcut.. I am surprised it works at all.
