I have seen memory usage in Firefox 7.0.1 climb steadily if left open for long periods. I have narrowed this down to Javascript and possibly Hotmail. I don't know if this is just for Hotmail or all JS sites.

I have restarted FF with plugins disabled and used about:memory and got these stats:

After running FF for 5 minutes:

¦ +---2.80 MB (03.96%) -- compartment(http://secure.shared.live.com/_D/F$Live....)

After running for 16 hours:

¦ +--108.97 MB (36.42%) -- compartment(https://secure.shared.live.com/_D/F$Live...)

After running for 24 hours:

¦ +--144.42 MB (38.79%) -- compartment(https://secure.shared.live.com/_D/F$Live...)

After running for 40 hours:

¦ +--181.51 MB (42.62%) -- compartment(https://secure.shared.live.com/_D/F$Live...)

As I have noted in another thread, if left running over a weekend(this was with plugins enabled) then it gets to:

¦ +--695.60 MB (51.94%) -- compartment(https://secure.shared.live.com/_D/F$Live...)

Are more stats needed?

I have the full memory:about lists for all those measurements, but posting might be unhelpful.

Thanks errolt,
Lets see if we are able to get some expert advice on this I have posted a blog comment

Thanks. That is a very appropriate blog to post. I would never have found it.

Can't see your comment yet though. Guess it must be approved first.

Thanks, Errol

The blog comment did not receive any answer. If you see this happening in safe mode and with no plugins I think it may be worth you going ahead and filing a bug for this.

But given the nature of webmail, which may try to update your mail, and will no doubt be streaming adverts the reply may just be that it is the expected behaviour when using such a site.

I have had this issue with Hotmail for a long time. It took a while to narrow it down since I really like to stay logged in to my email while the browser is running. I have lots of tabs open so normal startup memory usage is just over a Gig. If I leave the browser open all day WITHOUT ever logging into Hotmail, it stays pretty close to that. If I log in to Hotmail at startup, my memory usage will slowly climb until it's well over 2Gig by the end of the day. I think it's even worse with Firefox 11, but that could be in contrast to the better base memory usage I'm seeing for all the other tabs I have open. This is completely reproduceable, clear, and should be very easy for a Firefox developer to take a look at. They can use Trueswitch to migrate an existing populated email account from somewhere like Gmail to a new Hotmail account. Just leave a tab open logged into Hotmail and memory usage will climb like crazy. I understand Hotmail refreshes a lot and highlights the tab when new mail arrives and all that. However, the memory usage and subsequent browser slowdowns make it pretty much unusable. Not good.

It is unlikely developers will read this forum or this thread.

You will need to find an other route to report this. It may of course already be a well known issue and a Hotmail not Firefox fault. You could try the feedback option,

  • Firefox Button -> Help -> Submit feedback

but that will not really give you any feedback, and any comment you make may get lost in general noise.

If you have a reproducible problem (preferably with a simple reduced testcase to demonstrate) you could consider filing a bug for this. I am of the opinion that even if the fault is not with Firefox but with Hotmail; that Hotmail will be used by so many Firefox users that you have a chance of developers commenting. At the very least it gives the chance to get the problem documented and confirmed or otherwise.
