There seems to be a ton on this, I have no idea why Mozilla ignores this - I guess to increase the ammount of spying :)

How do I prevent firefox from updating automatically? | Firefox Support Forum | Firefox Help - https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/825143

firefox 6 auto installed itself, crashes on start - https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/864105

Well, I had Firefox 6, Linux, in Edit/Preferences/Update ALL OF THE CHECKBOXES ARE TURNED OFF!!

Then I leave Firefox overnight, I come back, and what do I see?

"A security and stability update for Firefox HAS BEEN DOWNLOADED and IS READY to be installed" - Firefox 7.0.1

"This update will be installed the next time Firefox starts"

NOOOOOOO - I DO NOT WANT THAT!!! NOOOO!1!!! Where is the Cancel button then?

Oh yeah - there is NO cancel button :) "Restart Now" and "Restart later" only...

So - WHAT do I have to do, SO THAT FIREFOX STOPS UPDATING AUTOMATICALLY?! Obviously, using preferences doesn't work... What should I do, short of compiling myself and hacking source code?

I love Firefox - but this kind of stuff pisses me off immensely... Please understand - SOME PEOPLE DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT WANT TO UPDATE AUTOMATICALLY!!!!

Even if firefox has downloaded the update, it should be possible to find and remove that before firefox restarts. (see also http://kb.mozillazine.org/Software_update#Software_Update_not_working_properly )

It is probably a better course of action to accept the update, the main differences between firefox 6 and 7 will be security fixes. There is a change in that there is the option to include telemetry but that is covered by strict privacy rules if you consider that spying do not opt in.

You are linking to a post where another user had problems with firefox 6 crashing on startup, however I assume that is not a problem you experience (your system details suggest you posted from firefox 6). If you do have firefox ignoring preferences, you may have some corruption or conflicts on your system, or an unapproved version of firefox.

If you consider Mozilla products to be spyware why continue to use them ?
