How to return to FF 3.x.x - I really dislike FF4

more options

Since I rather dislike everything FF4 has done to my cookies and just about everything else (plus the fact that it looks and works like a bad IE9 clone) and since I suspect that it has been less than thoroughly tested, my question is this: is it possible to return to the most recent 3.x.x version without a complete uninstall/reinstall cycle.

To downgrade to Firefox 3.6 first uninstall Firefox 4, but do not select the option to "Remove my Firefox personal data". If you select that option it will delete your bookmarks, passwords and other user data.

You can then install the latest version of Firefox 3.6 available from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html - it will automatically use your current bookmarks, passwords etc.

To avoid possible problems with downgrading, I recommend going to your profile folder and deleting the following files if they exist - extensions.cache, extensions.rdf, extensions.ini, extensions.sqlite and localstore.rdf. Deleting these files will force Firefox to rebuild the list of installed extensions, checking their compatibility, and reset toolbar customizations.

Too late, albeit probably accurate. Since I use XMarks, the simple Windows System Restore, followed by a reinstallation 3.6x did the trick without any need for upgrades.

It is rather unfortunate that FF appears to have adopted the Microsoft "Barby Doll" approach to interface design, coupled with the MS philosophy that every user is an imbecile who cannot be trusted with his or her PC.

Too bad.

Firefox is highly customizable and it is easy to undo those changes if you do not like them. Some can easily be done via the user interface or via a context menu, but others require an extension.

If you do not like the new appearance of Firefox 4 then you can change some setting to restore the Firefox 3 appearance.
You can right click the orange Firefox button to open the toolbar menu or use (F10) View > Toolbars.

  • Click the Menu Bar entry to make the Menu Bar visible.
  • Click "Tabs on Top" to remove the check mark and place the Tab Bar at its original position just above the browser window.

You can drag toolbar item to their original positions if you open the Customize window.
Open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize" or via "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout"
