How can I sync the events and tasks pane on Thunderbird with the calendar tab?

When browsing my mailboxes in Thunderbird the calendar does not show any events or tasks. To see them I have to physically select the calendar or task icons. This takes me away from my messages....

Do you have the Today Pane visible in the main window? The toggle icon is at the right end of the Status Bar.
