Just 2 add-ons for Thunderbird 68? (Add-ons availability)

After I have manually added Thunderbird 68 (Ubuntu 18.04.3, 64-bit) I realized there are only two extensions I can use: Lightning and Enigmail.

The official add-on site for Thunderbird doesn't contain compatibility option for 68. Just curious, shall I from now on to do without certain useful features (examples: remove duplicate messages, custom IMAP folders order).

It's very sad to see the addons site that knows nothing of version 68. As if no one is aware of its release.

You can view the list of add-ons that are compatible with TB 68 here. The list will (may?) change as 68 is deployed and more users request updates for their favourite add-ons.

There are several add-ons that work with TB 68, but at the moment it may take a bit of effort to locate them. Others are in the process of being updated by the add-on authors. Unfortunately, the two you mention, Remove Duplicate Messages and Manually sort folders, don't have 68 versions available at present.

That means I will be permanently out of luck, unless the 68-th version won't be updated for quite a long time, to allow extension authors enough time to upgrade the code.

Judging by what I see, the only reasonably convenient way to use Thunderbird is to only use versions that are 0.5-1 year old.

That would mean there are enough extensions to make the mail client as convenient as possible.

Using the latest version means the majority of extensions will still be incompatible and unusable.

@sfhowes Thanks for directing to that post. No one can guarantee that a given extension will be available for current TB version, but the stats at least provide some guideline.

Early adopters can expect few compatible add-ons early in a release cycle - because we cannot control the speed with which add-on authors update their add-ons (even though 68 beta began several months ago). This has has been the case for many years of major releases. But, as in the past, add-on availability will improve over time.

This is one reason why mainstream Thunderbird doesn't enable automatic updates early in the release cycle. But we cannot control how distros distribute new versions, nor whether users indepedently choose to install the new version on their own.

AIUI, you will have a better experience querying add-on availability from within Thunderbird, vs using the website.

@Wayne Mery Thanks for the explanations. When I try to access addons site directly from Thunderbird 68 (Linux), I get "Oops" error displayed instead of actual information on addons.

So ATM I have no much choice but searching manually from browser.

Does it work for you now?

Our developer reports the following "I suspect it's a screwed up user agent. Empty user agents [1] in particular were causing a 500 server error, but I've patched that. I know that distro [linux] versions of Thunderbird like to mess around with stuff like this, but still, it shouldn't be empty, unless the user has it set that way, so I don't know."

[1] You can find user agent string at Help > troubleshooting. Like "User Agent Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:68.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/68.1.0"

@Wayne Mary Wayne Mery Yes, the addons site opens now normally.

The "User-Agent" field is empty (no, I didn't erase it intentionally).

I see you have several questions in this topic that are not answered. It's partly because you have posted in a topic whose subject is quite unrelatd to your question.
