How can I update V17.0.9 to V52.8.0 (Help says V17 is up to date)?

I needed to move on from Eudora, so I installed Thunderbird V17.0.9 and imported my Eudora mailboxes. However Thunderbird V17 has not updated automatically. When I select Help / About Thunderbird / Check for Updates it reports that "Thunderbird is up to date". I tried installing V52.8.0 over the top of this version, but it resulted in an infinite number of copies and proved unworkable. Please, how can I update to the latest stable version and enable automatic updating from here on?

What does this mean? Copies of what? It doesn't hurt to uninstall the old version of Thunderbird before installing the new version.

When I installed V52 over the top of V17, I got (in addition to the usual TB screen) an endless set of tabs across the top of the screen, each with a whirling arrow indicating processor activity - which never stopped.

I'm please to say that your solution worked. I uninstalled V17 and then installed V52 successfully.

Many thanks
