Using Windows 8.2 with Thunderbird 52.1.1 (32-bit) - press Delete and emails go into Trash, but only remain there for a day or so. I want them to stay there until I delete them myself.

Chosen solution

if your account is imap you are subject to your providers retention policy with regard to mail in ANY folder, not just the trash/Deleted.

You can change the deleted folder to the trash on local folders in the account settings. but that will be a folder only available on the single device and will require you to move your profile folder to any new Thunderbird installations.
