Thunderbird is generally very good but I have one problem. I've set "check for new messages" lower and lower and am now on 2 minutes but, sometimes, Thunderbird doesn't download messages at all and I have to turn it off and back on again to get my messages. At these times, "get messages" doesn't work. Any suggestions on a cure?

a) Low values is generally a bad idea.

b) tell us more details about these accounts - ISP, pop or imap, etc

a) Can you please explain why low values (for checking messages) are generally a bad idea? I've had the problem since I changed to Thunderbird and started with a 10 minute period. I've now gone back up from the temporary 2 to 5.

b) I'm in the process of leaving an ISP that we've been with for 15 years so I'm experimenting with different ISPs and programs. I've therefore currently got four email addresses, three are IMAP and one is POP. When I'm happy with what I've got, I'll cut it back to two accounts. I'm happy with Thunderbird apart from this one issue.

a) I don't have a better answer than for some users, rarely, it can cause performance issues

b) Some ISPs don't behave well, and also some AV software doesn't behave well, for Thunderbird to get new messages. To test the later...

Use the three bar app menu button and select activity manager from the menu.

Do you see failed to connect to server messages? Some providers will only accept connections of a minimum frequency. Outllook/Hotmail for instance simply refuses log in attempts that occur more frequently than 15 minutes. That is specified in their term of service. Others I am sure have their own rules. With frequent attempts actually getting connected becomes a lottery.

The best way is to be notified of new mail using an IMAP account with a provider/server that supports email push notifications (IMAP IDLE Command). Google is one, but there are many.
