Deleted folders reappear (again and again)

I'm connecting to an MS Exchange server via smtp.office365.com and mostly this works OK by now. I do have a stupid problem, however: After deleting several folders, they always "come back" as "ghost folders" (grayed out and without messages) and it's impossible for me to get rid of them. Very annoying. I've tried a couple of steps:

  • of course, I tried deleting the folders through the Thunderbird interface, also from Trash, where they first move to
  • I also tried to delete msf-files associated with the deleted folders -- to no avail
  • I also tried to unsubscribe from these folders using the "Subscribe" interface -- this is not possible: I can tick off the folders, save my choices, but as soon as I open "Subscribe" again, these folders are back
  • I also tried to use Outlook, but the deleted folders are not shown in Outlook -- it seems to me that Thunderbird has difficulties letting them go

I'd be very thankful for any constructive help!

Ghost folders are (those grey looking folder in italics.) read only. This is something set by the mail server. So I would suggest logging into the exchange web interface and removing them there. You might get some sort of meaningful error there that is not making it to Thunderbird. (like "not authorised")

Do these folders have names reserved by the exchange server, like "deleted Items" or a group name that you work in for shared type folders.

Is your setup IMAP, or using the addon OWL https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/owl-for-exchange/

One thing I do know is the SMTP server is for sending mail, not getting it so that tidbit is not all that helpful.

As already mentioned in my original post: These folders do not show up, when I log into the office-server (neither via Outlook, nor when I log into the server via its web-interface). They seem to be successfully deleted on the server.

These folders have regular (or "regular") folder-names. Example: "@444-Mast-60h-2008_NordmanOla-NS". I don't think that these names interfere with any internals. But: I got the impression that (maybe) moving folders from one sub-folder to another one (in Thunderbird) does not work well in connection with the MS Exchange server. I do not know enough about the internal handling of such a "mover folder" operation, as initiated by dragging the folder over in Thunderbird, however.

My setup is through IMAP, SSL/TLS with OAuth2.

Since this is already quite a bit annoying on my side, unfortunately, I'd really welcome advice of how to overcome this situation (and get rid of these deleted folders that "pollute" my folders-list).

Many thanks, again!
