Hi friends,

I have a several subscriptions to a private calendars (Google, ical) that my organisation uses to keep everyone in the loop. They have always worked beautifully and some of them still do, but recently the main calendar subscription is no longer showing any events (not getting any error messages either). I have checked with the person organising the calendars and he assures me that no changes have been made to permissions or links.

I can subscribe to the calendar (using the same link) with MS Outlook, so it's definitely working...somehow. But it's not working in Thunderbird - not on my two Windows laptops and not not even on my Linux computer.

I have tried everything that I can think of - ticked visibility off/on, deleted subscription, cleared caches, recreated subscription, changed calendar colour, started TB with add-ons disabled, shaken my fist at the screen, cried.....but to no avail. This has been a problem for a couple of months now, so many computer and software restarts were involved.

What could possibly be the problem? Is there such a thing as having too many events in a calendar and therefore they don't show?

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your continued help sfhowes!

Woohoo - I've had success!

I have used the above-mention subscription link to my workplace calendar in my actual Google Calendar (via web browser) and this DOES show all of the events.

I have then subscribed to the calendar through TB as before: New Calendar > On the Network > iCalendar (ICS) > Location (using my workplace's ical subcription link)

At this point the calendar still did not display (exactly as described in my posts above).

I have now installed the 'Provider for Google Calendar' add-on and after logging into my google account I was asked if I wanted to 'upgrade' the existing Google calendar in TB - Yes.

And bazinga - the calendar events now show!

It makes no sense to me since the subscription link should have worked without logging into my Google account, but hey....

Very happy about this!

Thanks again!

Who is the calendar provider? If it's Google, how are you syncing with TB, i.e. which add-on, or is it entered directly as a CalDAV calendar?

Thanks for helping out, sfhowes

Yes, it is a Google calendar but I'm not trying to sync fully. The link is a mere subscription - one way only. I cannot and do not want to contribute.

Google calendars provide for this by supplying "Secret address in iCal format". This allows one-way subscription to a calendar.

The address looks something like this: https://calendar.google.com/calendar/ical/.............%40wcc...........edu.au/private-7d7648............68228ec7ab/basic.ics (minus all the full stops of course - added for privacy)

This address is entered directly into the 'New Calendar > On the Network > iCalendar (ICS) > Location' field. No addon is used.

As mentioned: it has always worked until recently. Other, similar calendars, also from same organisation (workplace) function without prob. But the main calendar suddenly just stopped populating events - shows nothing.

I'm not familiar with that type of calendar access, but if it has stopped working, it might be due to a change at the Google end. If you don't wish to use an add-on such as TbSync or add it as CalDAV directly, perhaps one of these methods will restore the events:

https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-us/thunderbird/addon/open-google-calendar/

https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-us/thunderbird/addon/google-calendar-plugin/

Yes, it does sound like a change at the Google end. Odd thing is that other Google calendars, also set up by my workplace, still work - I subscribe to them the same way as described previously and it just works.

Those two addons are not to my liking since it seems that they simply open up the Google calendar in a different tab. Ideally I'd like the calendar to show up in lightning.

Thanks all the same for helping out.

If you use an add-on like TbSync, the calendar can be set to read-only, same as if it is added directly as CalDAV.
