thunderbird no longer opens hyperlinks in firefox

All of a sudden when I click on a hyperlink in Thunderbird the link does not open in Firefox. In fact, nothing happens at all. I can copy and paste the link into Firefox and it will work fine, but I can't click on it in Thunderbird and have it work. I have tried all the troubleshooting tips including running Thunderbird in safe mode, and can find nothing.

I did not try that trick because today after I booted up my computer Thunderbird worked perfectly. Go figure.
