Hi all,

I have had a strange issue with Tbird 52.9.1. It's resolved now, but I thought everyone should know about it.

In the last 24 hours, Tbird on 3 different computers (all Win7 home 64-bit) suddenly refused to connect to IMAP servers until the computer was restarted. Meanwhile, other network functions - file share, browser, ping, DNS, etc. - continued to work fine. AFAICT, Tbird was the only program misbehaving.

The 3 installations have in common that they all connect to Comcast for mail, though to different accounts. 2 of them connect to other providers as well, but no connections to any providers could be made - so I'm guessing it is something local rather than any kind of server problem.

There were no new program installs or updates (except possibly AV signatures) in the last several days. The AV is Avast Free. The firewall is Comodo. I did try temporarily disabling both AV and firewall to see if something was blocking Tbird, but it made no difference.

I encountered this problem once before, but it was a few years ago and it affected only a single computer. Now whatever the problem is hit 3 computers in 24 hours.

Rebooting solves the problem. But I would like to know what was the problem. Anyone?

Thanks, George

Happened again. This morning 2 of the computers had to be rebooted to get Tbird to work. This is 5 occurrences in 3 days.

I'd really like to know what's going on with this latest Tbird.

And yet again. This time I lost cable service due to a thunderstorm while Tbird was open on 2 computers. When service returned, everything worked EXCEPT Tbird. Again I had to reboot to fix it.

Now 8 occurrences in 11 days. It is really becoming annoying. I've been using Tbird for many years, and I've never had so much trouble with server connections before.

If restarting Thunderbird didn't help (before rebooting), then it's unclear to me what else can be done.

Hi Wayne,

This last time I noticed that on both machines the problem was with the 1st email account [Comcast].

I don't remember if that was the case previously, but in those previous occurrences the problem happened in the morning when the program was first opened for the day.

This time it appeared that Tbird was hung up connecting to Comcast on both machines. Trying to look at mailboxes in that account gave only a wait cursor - nothing else worked. In the other accounts I could move around and look at mails that were there already, but no new mail would come in on any account until after the reboot.
