How to connect to _old_ Sync from one and only device with new OS

Howdy,

I own a single "device" (laptop) and have used Sync to store my bookmarks and passwords online as a way of not having to bother with backups for these during frequent reinstalls due to OS-experiments etc.

Yesterday my HDD crashed hard, so I mounted another one and did a fresh OS install (Qubes R2).

Now the fresh FireFox 32 that comes with the install will not let me reconnect to my old Sync data.

No othere devices available (nor USB-life systems) with recently Synced data locally.

It strikes me as _VERY_ strange that due to some policy of obliging people to start using a FireFox account I would now have to be deprived of my current bookmarks and passwords even if I _DO_ bite the poisonous apple and create such an account.

WTF is the logic here?

Cheers, Pudsy

The "logic" is that Sync has always intended to be used to synchronize multiple installations of Firefox, never for being used as a "backup service" as you have done. Plus the fact that the transition to the new version of Sync, with Firefox Accounts, started over 5 months ago (for Release version users - and about a year ago for Nightly pre-release version testers).

You can try installing a Firefox 28 [or earlier] version of Firefox and see if you can connect to Sync to recover your data.

I you accomplish that, you can update to Firefox 32 and then update your Sync account. Sync your Firefox bookmarks, history, passwords and more

Howdy Edmeister,

Thanks for the reply (!) Yes, I had figured as much ...

As I'm not going to remove current FF, install an old insecure one and going online with that in fresh system the procedure would be this I suppose:

Find old life CD with old, insecure FF-version, going online with that, reconnect, sync, quit FF, sort through local config files to find the bookmarks/passwords, backup to USB, reboot current fresh system and import old config files into new FF, hoping that this would even be possible/recognized.

I'll give it a shot.

Somehow would have expected that there would have been a more "elegant" way of migrating (such as an import option for old Sync stuff into new Sync or even automated import based on the same email address or some such)

Cheers for answering anyway!

P.S. Not sure about how stuff works here, but I have untagged my own and tagged your answer as "solving" so that you may get the credits for putting me on the right track - just in case there is some childish credit system in place here ;o)
