fyi - thunderbird is working fine as I'm not losing any incoming mail or any issues with sent mail. I suspect this is an issue with my local directory name and profile. The old provider was tampabay.rr.com(road runner) and my current is verizon.net(verizon).

In short, I'm just trying to change the old email to my current email in the local directory. Also, when I hover over "get messages" tab I see a drop message that says: get new messages for xxxxxxx@tampabay.rr.com (my old email account name).

Any help would be appreciated.

If you have changed your ISP, but are using exactly the same email address change the server settings. Tools > Account Settings > Server Settings make all necessary server settings chnages

Tools > Account Settings > 'Outgoing Server(SMTP) add a new smtp server.

Then point the account to use that server Tools > Account Settings select the mail account name bottom right - Outgoing server (SMTP) select the new smtp server. Click on OK

If you have changed your ISP and have a NEW email address:. Then you need to leave the old account alone as it contains your emails. Create a new mail account. File > New > Exisitng mail account Enter name, email address and password. Click on Continue. It will attempt to locate settings Make sure they are correct - Pop or IMAp is corrected chosen.

Thanks for the reply.

I don't believe I need to set up a new account as I did that when I switched from RR to verizon. All I'm trying to do is change the local directory in the server settings(all other setting pop & smtp are ok)in the local directory so it lines up with my existing account which is a verizon account. The local directory is showing my old email account name from tampabay.rr.com in the appdata file.

I apologize for any redundancy.

I hear you. There doesn't seem to be any issues with my tbird, I guess the issue is more of a pain then a problem, so unless anyone has an idea how to change the local directory name without conflicting my account I'll just let it be.

The local directory normally points to the relevant mail account. If you have not created a new mail account for the new email address, then you cannot point to it.

The reason for having one email address with it's own server settings is to make sure all saved settings are accurate and relevant to a particular mail account.

In your case it sounds like you had one mail account working ok and then you manually changed some of the server settings in order to connect to an entirely different email address and server settings, but wanted to keep using the same old mail account set up previously. That is precisely what you have got. All incoming emails will go to the old mail account name in your Profile name mail account folder.

If it is working ok and you do not want to create a new mail account for the new email address, then for backup purposes, all you need to remember is that your Profile name mail account will say the old mail account name.
