Ver 92.01 - I noticed lately that since pop out video has been enabled, now I find webpages automatically starting ads and playing the videos without me clicking or asking for such behavior.

Curious why this has happened without notification and what is the control to stop it?

I would recommend you address this directly with your customers as we might get the idea that this revenue stream is slightly dishonest.

Hi Michael, I think that's just an in-page ad. By default, the autoplay block silences auto-playing videos, but doesn't prevent them from playing silently or moving around the page when you scroll past them. More on that: Allow or block media autoplay in Firefox.

If the roving video ad is a feature of the site, you may need to use an ad blocker to hide them. If the video is injected by one of your add-ons, you can resolve the issue by disabling or removing that add-on. (Suggestions on those points below the line.)

For comparison, Firefox's Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature does not initiate itself, its windows are independent of the page -- for example, if you switch to a different Windows application, the PiP window stays in front -- and when you hover the video, it has a distinctive icon to return the video to its original placeholder. Here's an example:

If this is a new behavior on a site you visit often, with no explanation from the site:

Approach the problem as a case of potential external malware or rogue add-on.

This article suggests malware cleaners: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware.

You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions. On the right side, find the "Manage Your Extensions" heading.

If there is at least one extension before the next heading -- "Recommended Extensions" -- please continue:

Then cast a critical eye over the list below that heading. Any extensions Firefox installs for built-in features are hidden from this page, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage. Anything suspicious or that you just do not remember installing or why? If in doubt, disable (or remove). For your privacy and security, don't let mystery programs linger here. For diagnostic purposes, you could disable everything you don't plan to use in the next 4 hours by clicking its slider switch.

Any improvement?
