I'm running FireFox on Windows XP SP3.

I selected a bookmark from the bookmark drop down menu. Instead of opening a new tab, the URL for the bookmark opened in the Bookmark sidebar to the left of the main tab content.

Now, I cannot close or shrink to nothing the Bookmark sidebar. It takes up a lot of the screen & it is very frustrating that I cannot close or shrink it.

Please let me know if you have any tips on what to do to get rid of it.

Thanks.

Update:

I was able to close the sidebar by selecting the menu item View>Sidebar>Bookmarks. So, problem is practically solved. However, I was not able to get the sidebar to close by selecting the x in the upper right corner of the sidebar. There seems to be a bug in that mechanism to close the sidebar.

Thanks.

Bookmarks that open in the side bar is the default for bookmarks that are created via a link or button on a website to add a bookmark for that site.

  • Check the Properties of a bookmark via the right-click context menu in the side bar (Ctrl+B; Cmd+B on Mac).
  • In the Bookmarks Manager (Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks) you can click the More button in the Details pane at the bottom right.
  • Make sure that "Load this bookmark in the side bar" is not selected (un-check it).

Try closing to sidebar by pressing Ctrl + B.

Please report back soon.

Selecting Ctrl+B does close the sidebar. I guess it's just the x in the upper right corner that does not work.

That is a known bug. The X does not close the sidebar.

In up coming updates we hope that it will be fixed.

I almost forgot, there is the behavior where the URL for the selected bookmark opened in the bookmark sidebar rather than a tab.

What's with that?

Seems like some kind of bug to me...

I am not sure what the issue with the bookmark behavior is.

Can you please provide more details and possibly a screenshot of the issue.

Thank you in advance.

Here is the example:

I selected the bookmark for "https://trapster.com/devices/garmin-tomtom" from the bookmark dropdown menu on the right of the screen.

As you can see from the attached screen shot, the URL opened in the bookmark sidebar on the left of the screen. I have no idea how to access the URL in the bookmark sidebar.

I expected the URL for the selected bookmark to open in a new tab, or possibly, but not desired, the current tab. That way, I can access the URL in a tab like any other URL. Which is why I stored the URL in a bookmark and subsequently selected it.

I consider that a bug.

Different behavior.

When I selected Ctrl+B after selecting the bookmark & having it open in the bookmark sidebar, the sidebar did not close. The image of the URL in the sidebar cleared to the bookmark navigation as would normally display in the bookmark sidebar. Another selection of Ctrl+B closed the sidebar.

A little buggy?

BTW:

Scrolling of the URL image in the bookmark sidebar reveals that the image is a vertical section of the URL image. i.e. scrolling vertically reveals what would be expected to be displayed for the URL, but horizontal scrolling reveals nothing more than what is shown in the original width of the displayed image in the bookmark sidebar. If that is not clear, I can send a snapshot of the before & after image of the sidebar with horizontal scrolling.

Thanks for that reply. You have uncovered an unexpected side effect of my lack of knowledge of the FireFox bookmarks.

I'm not sure of the utility of the setting, but I selected the box to have the "Load this bookmark in the side bar" become active. And, I guess it did that. I still have no idea why that would ever be wanted or would be a default for any method of adding a bookmark. Is there really a reason to want this behavior?

What I was attempting to do was to get the bookmark to be visible in the list of bookmarks. I'm still not sure how to do that. If you can explain how to do that, I would appreciate it.This all started when I looked for the bookmark after I set it. I had difficulty finding it except in recently added bookmarks. I was looking for a way to make the bookmark easy to find.

Thanks for the help. I'm not really a doofus, I think. But reading back over my posts, I sure sound like one.

Thanks.

cthorne:

How did you save the bookmark that you can not find? Have you tried searching for it using the Search box in the Library window (Bookmarks > Show all Bookmarks or CTRL+SHIFT+B)?

If you used the star at the right end of the Location/URL bar, the first click on the star will save it to a folder named "Unsorted Bookmarks"; that folder will be at the bottom of the bookmark sidebar listing. If you had clicked the star a second time, you could have moved it elsewhere, including creating a folder for it or placing it in an existing folder.

EDIT - Added

I do not understand the rationale behind the opening of a bookmark in the sidebar.

Control B erases the bookmarks that follow me to a website I opened from the bookmark menu, but it is a pain in the butt to have to do it every time I open a new website. Why do the damn bookmarks follow me? Why not fix the problem, instead of forcing me to go through Ctrl B each time? This one thing pisses me off more than any other regarding Firefox !!
