When the computer "wakes" from sleep, how do I get it to return to the last screen I was on?
When the computer is in sleep mode, I click to start back up, it goes into a search on firefox and ultimately times out. I have to manually it the home icon or x out.

Are you trying to say that Firefox was open to a page when the computer went to sleep, and FF doesn't want to wake up when the computer does?
Did Firefox give you any kind of I have crashed message?
I found that after Firefox v29, a LOT of my settings and add-ons were changed /
reset. Try this;
Start Firefox in Safe Mode
While you are in safe mode;
Firefox Options > Advanced > General.
Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.
Check your setting. Then restart.
