I am a VERY recent transferee from Windows-XP SP-3 using IE-8 to Linux Zorin 6.0 using Mozilla Firefox 15.0.1. The Linux program Emulation, using GnoMenu 2.9, is similar to Windows-7. The transferrence of my Bookmarks (Favorites) from Windows system to the Linux system was successful. However, I seem to have lost the capablility of opening/viewing my Bookmarks from the desktop. I must now have to open Mozilla Firefox browser in order to open/view my Bookmarks.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Since I am VERY new to Linux OS, the advice should be test-proven (Beta tested), accurate, and fail-safe.

Why should you wish to open the bookmarks from the Desktop without opening Firefox ?

Note that Firefox will import and export HTML bookmark files, but does not natively use HTML bookmarks. The bookmarks along with the history are in a SQL database places.sqlite and backups are .json files .

The bookmarks library can be searched and sorted, and may include tags keywords and a visit count.

If what you are trying to do is have individual desktop shortcuts to individual webpages that should be easy to do. On Windows or Ubuntu the icon from the firefox URL bar will dragon & drop to the desktop and create a shortcut.

If you wish a shortcut to the library try

  • chrome://browser/content/places/places.xul

That will work from the address bar to open the library as a tab, or if used as a part of a desktop shortcut it used to will open the Library directly in Firefox, have not tried it recently.
